Expected to open in 2004 with 1,000 students, U.C. Merced will be U.C.'s tenth campus and the first American research university built in the 21st century. Over time, the campus will grow to 25,000 students and provide courses in dozens of areas of academic thought. Like its sister campuses, U.C. Merced will provide the highest academic experience while reaching out to serve students from throughout California with a special focus on the surrounding region. U.C.
